A beautiful Spalding Racer - 1895

"Goricke" Stayer WW 1

I have searched for many - many years for early
Stayer bikes of the WW 1 era. It seems that the
Germans may have melted everything down during this
time. I have been told by several collectors that
it is impossible to locate a Brennabor, Afficke, Corona
and even a Goricke Stayer bike of the first world war.

Here is an example of an early WW 1 Stayer that is a
Goricke. I am not sure though, that this is a true
Stayer bike, as the rear drop outs are forward facing.
Either way it is a nice example of what a Goricke
Stayer would have represented back in the day.

Notice the taped rims as was common during this time
rather than the linen wrapped rims that came later.
They did what they could in order to hold the tire
from slipping off at high speeds going in the corners.

Rarely do you see a rim stamped as "BASTIDE".
This one has never had the holes drilled for spokes.

1941 CCM Flyer Track bike

Here are a few pictures of my CCM Flyer Track bike.

I found this bike many years ago in Victoria B.C. Canada. It was
all black. Headset was spray painted red and I needed the bike
for my collection. When I got it home I started to sand
the black off. I was fortunate that someone painted right
over the original blue color. I polished an area of the
blue and had it color matched. The decals came from Mike Barry
in Toronto Canada. It has a Major Taylor stem with Titan bars.
It has the original head set, original b/b with the original
cranks - rare on early CCM's. The seat is a United Sprinters ( narrow ).
Wood rims are period correct Super Champions and are tied / soldered.

Here's a picture of an Opel Stayer. I believe the fork should
be reversed back to make it more correct. Although some pacing
bikes did run the fork this way, but not usually.

I just finished reading a book on the great Bobby Walthour.
The book is called "Life in the Slipstream". It was a little
dull in the beginning but got better as the chapters continued.
Good stories on the motorpacing events with guys crashing and
getting killed. I would recommend the book as a good read.

There is a movie out on Major Taylor that was made
years ago. It is called "Tracks of Glory". I think
the movie would be great just to see the early racers.

A Boogmans Track bike was offered to me recently and here
it is. Unfortunately, all the pieces are wrong for the bike
and only the frame / fork with an odd piece would be good to
keep. Needless to say, he still wanted HUGE money for it.
It is from the late 20's.

French Stayer

Here is a picture of an old French Stayer from around the
early 1920's with straight forks. He wasn't sure if he wanted
to sell it at the time. I believe it is in a collection in
Europe somewhere. I saw pics of it on Flickr.. and this is

1977 "Plum Vainqueur" 6 - day Track bike.

Made in Gent Belgium for the steep boards in Gent.

If I remember correctly, the velodrome is 166m round

with about 51 degree banking.

I bought this bike about 20 years ago from the original owner

out of the U.K. I only rode it a few times. It was the best

bike I ever rode / raced on the track.

I don't believe this is a racer though as he

It has since been removed and has disappeared.

It's information is posted. We believe though through some

historians that it is one of the 3 original bikes made and

not a replica as stated.

I recently purchased a Bastide Stayer and started
the stripping of the old red paint. Underneath the
red is the original black paint and original nickel
fork crown.

I added a picture of another red Bastide on the wall
of a friends bike shop. I believe he said that his has
been painted red over the original black also.

We believe that this Bastide I just purchased is
a very early example from the era of 1913 when
Bastide started to make frames.

52" Penny Farthing "RACER"

This Penny Farthing just sold in the U.K. and is claimed to

be a "Matchless" of the 1880's. Reported to be a genuine

"RACER" . Patented - Aeleous bearings and also a saddle

by "Lamplaugh & Brown". Sold for about 1900 pounds.

Most - if not all "RACERS" had their seats bolted directly

to the back bone. This one has a spring seat which is odd!

easy to build a case like this if one wanted to do this. I think
I'm going to try it here soon as I know a guy who is really

Raphael Geminiani Track bikes

Found a couple of pictures of a white Raphael Geminiani track

bike from about the 1960's. Added a picture to compare with

my blue one. I took these pics of the ivory one in or around 1989.

It has been built up with early components to give it the look

of an early track bike of the 40's or 50's when in fact it is about

the 1965 period time frame.

I have a 1962 Rapheal Geminiani track bike that I am restoring

now and will be the same color combination as the ivory one listed.

It will be "For Sale" soon ....

Eddie "Cannon" Bald 1897

Eddie "The Cannon" Bald was a champion as seen by his

flag wrapped around his waste. Taken from an orig poster

that I have of him with Sims and Macdonald - also champions.

Eddie Bald was a bit of a racist back in the day. He refused

to race Major Taylor ( who was a black racer ) for many years.

When he did finally give in to race Taylor, Eddie "The Cannon"

Bald was beaten. That was a great day in bicycle racing history.

Here is a photo of Bald on his Columbia model 44. I have searched

for years and would love to have one in my collection. Please let

me know if you know of one for purchase. A finders fee involved..

Misc track bike

In the far corner is a 1941 CCM Flyer track bike. Restoration started

and hope to finish it soon.

Some original 6 day jerseys hanging and a very rare russian jersey

from the CCCP era ( in red ) - has the dagger in the chest. Raced

with history..

Malvern Star "Stayer" < Opperman ~ Lamb >

An interesting duo ~~~ The red bike is supposedly the bike of

the great "Hubert Opperman". The other gold bike is the bike

of team mate "Fatty Lamb". ~~~ Circa 1928 - 1931 ~~~

Hubert Opperman could not beat "Fatty Lamb" at any of the

pacing events and any record he held before "Fatty Lamb"

joined the team, was beaten by Fatty.

The gold bike ridden / raced by "Fatty Lamb" is all original and

his name is still on the top tube. This is a confirmed bike and is

genuine in every detail.

The red bike of "Hubert Opperman" has recently surfaced and

questions surround this bike as being authentic, for me anyways.

1> it appears to be restored which is a real shame. Originality

is everything here with these bikes. The name is gone and anything

can be made up as a replica.

2> the forks just don't look right on this bike for some reason. Too

much bend in them.

3> has road bars / stem which is not correct and no saddle support.

4> all the pictures I have of Hubert Opperman with his bike show

him with a different stayer bike. I haven't seen a picture of him

with this bike and would love to see him with this Malvern Star to

help confirm the validity of the this piece. Still a beautiful bike

but I have doubts for some reason.

Can someone please forward pics of Hubert Opperman's Stayer

bikes --- the red one in particular.

A card that is on ebay. A very interesting Hard Tire Safety .....Look
closely and you can see two cranks. The left side has a much larger
crank than the right. I'm not exactly sure but I would assume that
once your speed was up, you shifted to the left crank for cruising
at higher speeds. Anyone got an idea...

I had the exact same Racycle offered to me for sale 2 years ago

that is in the top picture. Same forks, cranks etc etc. Exactly the

same bike and the price was $800. I passed on it and now wish

maybe I should have bought it. It needed total restoration.
